You need to include a variable edges: (Matlab Help) : N = histc(X,EDGES), for vector X, counts the number of values in X that fall between the elements in the EDGES vector (which must contain monotonically non-decreasing values). N is a LENGTH(EDGES) vector containing these counts. [N,Xedges,Yedges] = histcounts2(X,Y) partitions the values in X and Y into 2-D bins, and returns the bin counts, as well as the bin edges in each dimension. The histcounts2 function uses an automatic binning algorithm that returns uniform bins chosen to cover the range of values in X and Y and reveal the underlying shape of the distribution. I am trying to understand the Histc function of Matlab, but I am not able to get what it means by Index Matrix in this syntax [N,BIN] = HISTC(X,EDGES, ... The official documentation of Matlab does not contain any examples with this index matrix and I have not seen much Matlab examples with this NBIN code. Call hist with at least one output argument. If you supply nbins, then it must be a constant, scalar value. The values in the input array must be real. The orientation of vector outputs might not match the orientation in MATLAB ®. See Variable-Sizing Restrictions for Code Generation of Toolbox Functions (MATLAB Coder).

Now I want to do a histogram count of how many elements of the vector fall within each of the intervals. If these were simply continuous intervals (without gaps), then one could use histc. Even if the intervals were guaranteed to be always discontinuous (i.e., with gaps), I could have still used histc and thrown out the counts in the gaps.

n = histc(x,edges) counts the number of values in vector x that fall between the elements in the edges vector (which must contain monotonically non-decreasing values). n is a length (edges) vector containing these counts. Unlike the other two style options for bar: grouped and stacked, histc (and hist) cannot be used together with Name-Value pairs (as answered here)..
